VCA Emergency Animal Hospital & Referral Center is a full-service, 24-hour veterinary emergency and specialty hospital. We provide emergency and urgent care, around-the-clock intensive care, and board-certified specialists in Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Oncology, Surgery, and Holistic Health. Our hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and is a member of the San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association (SDCVMA).

  • Elizabeth Leech

    DVM

    Elizabeth B. Leech, MVB, MRCVS, DACVECC, Medical Director is a board certified emergency and critical care specialist. She was the first veterinarian in San Diego to achieve board certification in this specialty. Dr. Leech has been on staff at our hospital since 1986. She earned her veterinary degree from the University of Dublin and completed advanced education and clinical training at Purdue University in Indiana. She then completed an internship in small animal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania before working in private practice on the East Coast. Dr. Leech manages the veterinary staff and over 40 technicians. She also supervises the hospital's veterinary internship program.

  • Sara Ford

    DVM

    Sara L. Ford, DVM, DACVIM earned her DVM degree in 1989 from the University of California Davis. She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, followed by a residency in internal medicine at UC Davis. Dr. Ford became board certified in internal medicine in 1994. She has been practicing at our hospital since 1995. Dr. Ford is an advocate of compassionate therapeutics for the cancer patient. She is considered an expert in diabetic management and feline medicine. Dr. Ford has published numerous scientific articles and book chapters. She lectures frequently to veterinarians and animal health technicians.

  • Holly Mullen

    DVM

    Holly S. Mullen, DVM, DACVS received her DVM degree from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1985. She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Animal Medical Center in New York City where she received the 1986 Intern of the Year award. She completed a residency in small animal surgery, also at AMC. In 1990, she became a board certified veterinary surgeon and was appointed senior staff surgeon at AMC where she was also selected as the 1990 Teacher of the Year. Dr. Mullen joined our hospital in 1995. She has authored numerous scientific articles and professional book chapters. She lectures extensively at national and international seminars and meetings.

  • Sharon Huston

    DVM

    After earning her DVM degree from Michigan State University in 1998, Dr. Huston completed a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery, followed by a three-year residency in veterinary cardiology. Dr. Huston achieved board certification in cardiology in 2002. She remained in New York City as owner of NYC Veterinary Cardiology and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to providing cardiology services to the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program, she is staff cardiologist for the ASPCA. Dr. Huston participates in training veterinary students from schools across the country and is a cardiac mentor for numerous veterinary interns and residents. Dr. Huston is a frequent lecturer in the Southern California community and at national veterinary conferences.

  • Therese Craychee

    DVM

    Therese J. Craychee, DVM, MS, DACVR obtained her DVM degree in 1985 from the University of California Davis. Dr. Craychee decided to pursue a master's degree in comparative pathology and returned to UC Davis in 1987. She worked as a sonographer at the Large Animal Clinic at UC Davis while pursuing her degree. She then served a veterinary radiology residency at UC Davis from 1989-93. Dr. Craychee became a board certified veterinary radiologist in 1992. She frequently lectures to the veterinary community on radiology related topics and joined our hospital in 1994.

  • Barrie Sands

    DVM

    Barrie E. Sands, DVM, CVA obtained her DVM degree from Ross University in St. Kitts in the British West Indies in 1991. She completed an internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City and has been in practice at our hospital since 1996. Dr. Sands is also a Certifed Veterinary Acupuncturist and sees patients by appointment.

  • Michele Chin

    DVM

    Michele Chin, DVM obtained her DVM degree from the University of California Davis in 1999. She completed an internship at our hospital in 2000 and joined our staff in 2001. In addition to her duties as an Emergency / Critical Care clinician, Dr. Chin serves as our Director of Interns and Externs.

  • Marisa DeAvilla

    DVM

    Marisa DeAvilla, DVM, received her D.V.M. from the University of California Davis in 1989. She worked in mixed and small animal practices in Lake and Mendocino counties before moving to San Diego in 1996. Since that time, Dr. DeAvilla has practiced emergency and critical care medicine at the VCA Emergency Animal Hospital. Prior to attending veterinary school, Dr. DeAvilla received her B.A. in biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. After graduating, she worked as a biologist aboard a Tall Ship in the Western North Atlantic, focusing on population dynamics of free ranging cetaceans, primarily humpback whales. In her spare time, Dr. DeAvilla enjoys gardening, cooking, and her American Saddlebred horses.

  • Mitzi Howard

    DVM

    Mitzi M. Howard received her DVM from UCD in 1989. Her undergraduate studies were completed at Harvey Mudd and Scripps Colleges. Before attending veterinary school she worked in biomedical research at Scripps Clinic & Research Foundation and UCSD School of Medicine for eight years. She practiced in Australia for two years, working in mixed practices and for the RSPCA before returning to San Diego in 1991. She worked in multiple general small animal veterinary practices in the greater San Diego area before joining EAHRC in 1995. Dr. Howard and her husband live in La Jolla with their two dogs and a salt water reef aquarium. In her spare time she enjoys travel, biking, sewing, scrapbooking and making jewelry.

  • Jeanine Persano

    DVM

    Jeanine M. Persano, DVM obtained her DVM degrees from Tufts University in 1996. She completed an internship at our hospital in 1997 and has been in practice here since that time.

  • Andrew Trempe

    DVM

    Andrew Trempe, DVM obtained his DVM degree from the University of California Davis in 2002. He completed an internship at our hospital in 2003 and joined our staff full time in 2004. His interests include ultrasound, feline medicine, toxicology, and sepsis. In his off time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, 3 dogs, and 3 cats. In addition, as a native San Diegan, he is an avid Chargers and Padres fan.

  • Amy Nadolski

    DVM

    Amy Nadolski DVM, earned her veterinary degree from the University of Missouri in 2010. She completed a Small Animal Rotating Internship with us in 2011 before starting as our Emergency and Critical Care Resident. Dr. Nadolski will be finished with her residency in 2014. When she's away from the hospital, she enjoys traveling, camping and spending time at the beach with her husband and 2 dogs, Molly and Jersey.

  • Adonia Hsu

    VMD

    Dr. Adonia Hsu is a board certified cardiologist she received her VMD in 2003 from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Veterinary Medicine. She practiced general veterinary medicine for several years at Park Slope, Brooklyn NY before pursuing the specialty of cardiology. Dr. Hsu completed a one year small animal internship at Advanced Veterinary Care Center in Lawndale California followed by a residency in cardiology at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Hsu has a special interest in interventional cardiology. Dr. Hsu joins us from Seattle, where she was voted one of the Top Veterinarians in Seattle for 2011 in Seattle Met magazine. We are excited to expand our service and plan to have cardiology service available 6 days a week by September of this year. .

  • Angela Sartor

    DVM

    Angela Sartor, DVM, received her veterinary degree from University of California Davis in 2008. She then completed a 1 year rotating internship with Veterinary Medical and Surgical Group followed by a 1 year surgical Internship with Animal Surgical and Emergency Center. Dr Sartor joined VCA Emergency Animal Hospital & Referral center after completing her 3 year surgical residency with Sage Centers for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care in Northern California. She has a special interest in minimally invasive surgeries and hopes to expand the services offered by our hospital.

  • Jessica Markovich

    DVM

    Dr. Jessie Markovich is a 2008 graduate of the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. After veterinary school she completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at VCA Animal Referral and Emergency Center of Arizona and a residency in small animal internal medicine at the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. She is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is currently completing a second residency in small animal clinical nutrition. Although Dr. Markovich has received extensive training in all aspects of internal medicine, her special interests include urinary disease, interventional medicine, and the nutritional management of chronic diseases. Dr. Markovich has authored numerous scientific articles and professional book chapters, and still finds time to work on additional research.
